Membership categories
All applicants must live and work in New Zealand or must have previously lived here and retain significant links to New Zealand.
Applicants may be accepted into NZSTI in one of the following categories:
Full Member
Persons with a high level of certified and validated competency in either translating or interpreting in their chosen language pairs.
Affiliate
Persons who do not meet the criteria for full member status. Generally affiliates will have attended part-time training courses to obtain qualifications in translation and/or interpreting studies or have validated competency in either translating or interpreting.
Observer
Persons who have an interest in the society and profession but do not meet the criteria for either full member or affiliate status. This category is also suitable for T&I students and trainers. Observers are not considered to be qualified active practitioners and therefore may not describe themselves as a 'translator' or 'interpreter'.
Other
The categories of fellow, retired member, honorary member and overseas member are conferred at the discretion NZSTI’s national council.
